Wednesday 18th April – walk **** Bawdsey – sunny and hot.

With the forecast for the rest of the week sunny and hot and no wind it was too a good a chance not to go away in the van. We didn’t want to drive too far so settled on an old favourite of ours Bawdsey Quay. We had to do some things in Ipswich first - take an old bike given to Dan to the charity in Holywells park where they are renovated and resold:). Take something back to Curry’s then finishing off with a visit to my Dad. We haven’t seen him for ages as we have been away travelling in the van. We arrived at Dads at about midday to find him in the garden staining the fence. Mag made us all a cuppa and we had a nice catch up sitting in the sun. He said that his car battery had gone flat in the garage and we said we could help him bump start it so he could take it to the garage to have a new battery fitted. He then treated us to fish and chips which we walked to get as it is only around the corner. It was very tasty too! We went out to his garage and the car started first time! so that saved us towing it to get it started. We said our good-byes as he headed for the garage and we headed to Bawdsey. It is a bit of a trek through Melton and we were hoping all the way that the best parking spot in the lay-by farthest from the quay was empty. We passed a hive of activity with big lorries and diggers doing the electric cable which stretches for miles across the Suffolk countryside and is going to be used to bring the electricity in from the huge offshore windfarms. Then past the first yellow field of rape we have seen this year:) Then luck was on our side as our favourite quiet spot was free and we soon had the kettle on enjoying the great River Deben views. The ferry was busy and a few yachts were heading up river despite the light winds. The gulls were very noisy for a while as 2/3 fishing boats sorted their catch out - feeding the birds the guts!. After school several families came to enjoy the weather on this nice little beach. We went for a walk at about five just up past the Quay to Bawdsey beach, then as it is Wednesday, racing night at Felixstowe Ferry sailing club, we were entertained until sunset by the many dinghies and cats struggling around the course in light winds against the strong tide! As usual we were treated to a top sunset here, made special with the cloudy streaks caused by aeroplanes, and enjoyed a really good peaceful night in the van – top spot.
